Cameron Parish FORTIFIED Roofs and the Fortify Homes Grant
Cameron Parish is the entire southwest corner of Louisiana's coast, one of the largest parishes in the state by land area and one of the emptiest. It is marsh, water, and cheniers, the low oak-covered ridges that are the only ground here standing more than a few feet above the Gulf. The parish seat, Cameron, sits at the mouth of the Calcasieu Ship Channel with open water on one side and marsh on the other. Nothing in Louisiana is more exposed than this.
Why a FORTIFIED roof matters in Cameron Parish
A hurricane aimed at this coast makes landfall on Cameron Parish itself, not on somebody else's parish first. Hurricane Audrey (1957) drove a storm surge across Cameron, Creole, and Grand Chenier, Hurricane Rita (2005) destroyed much of the parish, and Hurricane Laura (2020) made landfall at Cameron as a Category 4.
Communities in Cameron Parish
Cameron, the parish seat, is at the mouth of the Calcasieu Ship Channel on the Gulf. Creole is east of it on Louisiana Highway 82, the road that runs the length of the coast, and Grand Chenier is farther east again on the ridge that gives it its name. Hackberry sits north of the seat on the west side of Calcasieu Lake, and Grand Lake, the parish's largest community, is at the north end of that same lake. The parish is enormous on the map, and nearly all of it is marsh and open water.

Is Cameron Parish eligible
Cameron Parish is among the parishes the Louisiana Department of Insurance lists as eligible for the Fortify Homes grant, as of August 5, 2026. Eligibility is confirmed at the address level, and the list changes every round, so the official map is the only word on whether your specific home qualifies right now. Check your address on the live LDI Fortify Homes map, and apply through the state at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, not on this site.
How the grant works for a Cameron Parish home
The Fortify Homes grant reimburses the cost of rebuilding your roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, up to $10,000 per home. It is a cap on a reimbursement, not a flat check, and the money is paid to your contractor after IBHS issues the certificate. You gather bids from at least 3 approved contractors you choose, and once you are cleared the work must be finished within 90 days.
Do not start roof work before you are selected and the bid process is complete.
Approved contractors may not begin until you have the official notice that you are cleared to proceed. Starting early voids your eligibility, grant and all. Wait for the notice before anyone in Cameron or anywhere else touches the roof.
