FORTIFIED roofs in Lake Charles
Lake Charles is built along the north and east shores of the lake it took its name from, a wide bend in the Calcasieu River, with Interstate 10 crossing the water at the western edge of the city. Downtown backs into the Charpentier Historic District, dozens of blocks of Victorian and Craftsman houses put up by carpenters rather than architects during the lumber boom. South of there the city runs out toward Prien Lake and around the Interstate 210 loop through subdivisions that filled in decade by decade. Two very different kinds of roof, one shared exposure.

Wind reaching Lake Charles has crossed open water most of the way in. There is lake on one side of town and marsh south of it, and neither slows a storm the way a forest or a dense city would, so a hurricane that comes ashore on this stretch of coast is still close to full strength when it arrives. The old Charpentier houses carry steep pitches, turrets, dormers, and porch roofs tied into the main plane, and every one of those joints is a place for wind to get started. Newer construction out by the loop is simpler but not automatically stronger. A FORTIFIED roof answers both cases the same way: the deck is re-nailed with ring-shank nails and sealed, the edges are detailed, and the covering carries a wind rating. If your roof is already due, that is when this costs the least, because the expensive part, tearing off and re-decking, is happening either way.
Hurricane Rita (2005) came ashore at Sabine Pass on the Texas line and put Lake Charles on the damaging side of the track, and Hurricane Laura (2020) made landfall at Cameron as a Category 4 and ran north over the city.
The Fortify Homes grant in Lake Charles
Lake Charles is in Calcasieu Parish, which the Louisiana Department of Insurance lists as eligible for the Fortify Homes grant as of July 2, 2026. The grant reimburses the cost of rebuilding your roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, up to $10,000 per home. It is a cap on a reimbursement, not a flat check, and the money goes to your contractor after IBHS issues the certificate. Selection is a random lottery, so registering is not the same as being awarded.
Only certain areas of Calcasieu Parish are eligible, not all of it, so a Lake Charles address is not automatically covered. Confirm your specific address on the LDI map before you count on the grant.
Eligibility is settled at the address level and the list changes every round, so check your address on the live LDI Fortify Homes map, and apply through the state at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, not on this site.

You gather bids from at least 3 approved contractors you choose, and no one may begin until the official notice says you are cleared. Starting early voids your eligibility. Once you are cleared, the work has 90 days to finish.
What it pays back, grant or no grant
The grant is a lottery. The other two payoffs are not. A FORTIFIED designation earns a required cut on the wind portion of your home insurance in Louisiana, every year the designation stays in force, and the state tax credit returns up to $10,000 of qualifying costs on a roof you finance yourself. A Lake Charles homeowner who never wins a grant can still come out ahead on both.
