What a FORTIFIED roof saves you on insurance
A FORTIFIED roof is not just a sturdier roof. In Louisiana it earns a required cut in your wind insurance, year after year, for as long as the designation stays in force. That ongoing discount is a big part of why the retrofit pays for itself over time.
The risk you take off the table
Wind insurance is expensive here because the risk is real. When a hurricane peels the roof off a house, the claim is not a few shingles, it is the ceilings, the floors, the wiring, and everything the family owned, plus months of paying to live somewhere else. Insurers price for that. Louisiana's answer is to require them to discount the homes least likely to become that claim, and a FORTIFIED roof is how you prove yours is one of them. The savings below are what that proof is worth, every year.
The discount is required by law
Louisiana law requires every insurer that files rates to give an actuarially justified discount to homes built or retrofitted to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard. The statute names IBHS and FORTIFIED directly, uses mandatory language, and limits the credit to policies with wind coverage, applied to the wind or hurricane portion of the premium.
The key detail is where the discount lands. It applies to the wind or hurricane portion of your premium, the part that pays for storm damage, not the whole bill. So the savings are real, but they come off one slice of the premium.
What a roof-only designation earns
For a FORTIFIED Roof, the baseline level the grant is built around, the benchmark discount runs 16 percent in the North zone to 29 percent in the South zone. South Louisiana, where the storm risk is highest, sits at the top of that range. The larger discounts in the table below take FORTIFIED Silver or Gold, which add reinforced windows, doors, and structural bracing, not a roof alone.
The Regulation 136 benchmark table
Under Regulation 136 (Fortified Homes Premium Discounts), Louisiana sets a benchmark discount for each zone and FORTIFIED level, applied to the wind or hurricane portion of premium. These benchmarks become mandatory for policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2027. Before January 1, 2027, discounts are set by each insurer and have historically run about 15 to 30 percent.
| Zone | FORTIFIED Roof | Silver | Gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | 16% | 20% | 24% |
| Central | 27% | 35% | 42% |
| South | 29% | 43% | 49% |
Benchmarks are the minimum on the wind or hurricane portion of premium. Actual discounts vary by insurer and by filing. The benchmarks are the minimum an insurer must apply unless it can actuarially justify less.
What Louisiana carriers actually file
Most Louisiana homeowners insurers offer FORTIFIED Roof discounts of roughly 15% to 40% on the wind or hurricane portion of premium; a few high-value-home carriers go higher.
The table below lists the FORTIFIED Roof discount each carrier has on file with the state, for the wind or hurricane portion of premium. These are filed maximums, not a quote. What you get depends on your policy, your location, and your FORTIFIED level, so treat them as a guide, not a guarantee.
| Carrier | FORTIFIED Roof discount |
|---|---|
| State Farm | up to 39% |
| USAA | up to 37% |
| Occidental Fire & Casualty | 30% |
| Gulf States | 25% |
| Louisiana Citizens (LCPIC) | up to 24.3% |
| Centauri National | 15% to 20% |
| Amica Mutual | up to 19% |
| American National | 7% to 19% |
| ANPAC Louisiana | up to 17.2% |
| Chubbhigh-value-home carrier | up to 45.62% |

Estimate your yearly discount
Put in the wind portion of your premium and your zone to see what a FORTIFIED roof could take off it each year. It is a planning estimate, not a quote, but it shows the shape of the savings.
Enter the wind or hurricane portion of your premium, not the whole bill. On a coastal policy it is often the largest line.
Enter your wind premium above to see the estimated yearly discount.
Estimate only, based on the Regulation 136 benchmark for your zone and filed carrier discounts. It is not a quote. Your actual discount depends on your insurer, your policy, and your FORTIFIED level.
You do not need the grant to get the discount
The discount is tied to the FORTIFIED designation, not to the grant. Any FORTIFIED-designated home qualifies, whether the roof was paid for by a Fortify Homes grant or entirely out of pocket. The IBHS FORTIFIED certificate is the document your insurer needs to apply it.
If you are financing the roof yourself, you can pair this discount with the Louisiana FORTIFIED roof tax credit. For what the standard actually requires, see the FORTIFIED Roof guide.
