FORTIFIED roofs in Slidell
Slidell started as a railroad camp. Surveyors for the New Orleans and Northeastern came through in 1882 on their way toward Meridian, and the grid they laid out east of the tracks is Olde Towne today. The city grew away from there along the highways rather than the rails. Interstate 10 crosses the bottom of it, Interstate 12 ends at that crossing, and Interstate 59 begins there and heads northeast. Underneath all of it is low ground at the eastern end of Lake Pontchartrain, where the water narrows into the Rigolets and runs out toward Lake Borgne and the Gulf past that.
Why a FORTIFIED roof matters in Slidell
Slidell gets both halves of a hurricane, and they arrive from different directions. Water comes from the east and southeast, pushed up through the Rigolets out of open water, which is why the flood conversation in this city never really stops. Wind is the other half, and it does not check whether your address is in the surge zone. Hurricane Zeta made that plain. It came through fast, it left most of Slidell dry, and it still damaged more homes on the south end of the city than anywhere else in the parish. Wind is also the half a homeowner can build against. A FORTIFIED roof re-nails the deck with ring-shank nails and seals it, so a lost covering does not become a lost ceiling, and the edges where wind starts its work get detailed instead of left at the minimum. Flood coverage pays for what the water ruins. It does nothing to keep the roof on, and the roof is the part of this house you actually get to decide about.
Hurricane Isaac (2012) pushed lake water into Olde Towne Slidell and left crews rescuing people from flooded homes, and Hurricane Zeta (2020) came through eight years later as a wind event, damaging homes across the south end of the city.
The Fortify Homes grant in Slidell
Slidell is in St. Tammany Parish, which the Louisiana Department of Insurance lists as eligible for the Fortify Homes grant as of July 2, 2026. The grant reimburses the cost of rebuilding your roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, up to $10,000 per home. It is a cap on a reimbursement, not a flat check, and the money goes to your contractor after IBHS issues the certificate. Selection is a random lottery, so registering is not the same as being awarded.
Only certain areas of St. Tammany Parish are eligible, not all of it, so a Slidell address is not automatically covered. Confirm your specific address on the LDI map before you count on the grant.
Eligibility is settled at the address level and the list changes every round, so check your address on the live LDI Fortify Homes map, and apply through the state at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, not on this site.

What it pays back, grant or no grant
The grant is a lottery. The other two payoffs are not. A FORTIFIED designation earns a required cut on the wind portion of your home insurance in Louisiana, every year the designation stays in force, and the state tax credit returns up to $10,000 of qualifying costs on a roof you finance yourself. A Slidell homeowner who never wins a grant can still come out ahead on both.
