Tax credit
The Louisiana FORTIFIED roof tax credit
Here is the part most homeowners miss. You do not have to win the grant lottery to come out ahead on a FORTIFIED roof. Louisiana added a state tax credit for the work in 2025, and it stands on its own. Pay for the roof yourself, claim the credit, and you also earn the required wind insurance discount that comes with the designation.
The FORTIFIED roof tax credit
Act 404, R.S. 47:6044
A nonrefundable state income tax credit for 100 percent of qualified costs to install or retrofit a roof to the FORTIFIED standard, for expenses incurred on or after July 1, 2025. It is capped at $10,000 per residence, with unused credit carried forward up to 3 years, for homestead-exempt owner-occupied homes. A $10 million per fiscal year cap applies on a first-come basis, and the credit sunsets December 31, 2031. It cannot be combined with an LFHP grant for the same expenses.
If you win a grant, the state does not tax it
Act 32, R.S. 22:1483.1(F) and 47:293(9)(a)(xxvii)
LFHP grant amounts awarded on or after January 1, 2025 are excluded from Louisiana taxable income for state individual income tax purposes, effective June 4, 2025. The grant may still be taxable on your federal return.
For how the grant itself works, see the Fortify Homes grant guide.
The retrofit deduction
Act 473, R.S. 47:293(2)
The Voluntary Construction Code Retrofitting Deduction, worth 50 percent of qualifying costs, now covers FORTIFIED retrofits, and the cap doubled from $5,000 to $10,000 per residence, for taxable periods on or after January 1, 2026. A grant recipient may deduct qualifying out-of-pocket costs the grant did not cover, but the same expenses cannot be used for both the credit and the deduction.
Before you count on any of this

You can read the source yourself in LA Dept. of Revenue RIB 25-020, FORTIFIED Roof Tax Credit and Related Retrofitting Incentives (rev. 2026-03-19). For what earns the credit in the first place, see the FORTIFIED Roof guide.
