Vermilion Parish FORTIFIED Roofs and the Fortify Homes Grant
Vermilion Parish is where the Acadiana prairie runs out of land. Abbeville sits in the middle of it on the Vermilion River, a courthouse town built around Magdalen Square, with rice and cane on the north side and the marsh starting not far to the south. Keep going and the parish turns to open water: Vermilion Bay to the east, the Gulf along the bottom, and Louisiana Highway 82 coming across from Cameron to run the coast past Intracoastal City with wetland on both sides of it.
Why a FORTIFIED roof matters in Vermilion Parish
Vermilion does not get a warning shot. Water that reaches Abbeville has come straight up the bay and the bayous with nothing standing in its way, and it has gone farther inland here than people expect it to. Abbeville is the parish seat and the center of everything here, on the Vermilion River at the point where U.S. 167 comes down from Lafayette and ends. Maurice is the last town on that highway before you get there, up at the north end of the parish. West of Abbeville the prairie opens out, first to Kaplan and then to Gueydan near the parish line, which calls itself the Duck Capital of America and has the marsh to back the claim up. Erath is southeast of Abbeville, down where the prairie starts giving way to wetland and the bays are not far off.

Is Vermilion Parish eligible
Vermilion Parish is among the parishes the Louisiana Department of Insurance lists as eligible for the Fortify Homes grant, as of August 5, 2026. Eligibility is confirmed at the address level, and the list changes every round, so the official map is the only word on whether your specific home qualifies right now. Check your address on the live LDI Fortify Homes map, and apply through the state at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, not on this site.

How the grant works for a Vermilion Parish home
The Fortify Homes grant reimburses the cost of rebuilding your roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, up to $10,000 per home. It is a cap on a reimbursement, not a flat check, and the money is paid to your contractor after IBHS issues the certificate. You gather bids from at least 3 approved contractors you choose, and once you are cleared the work must be finished within 90 days.
Do not start roof work before you are selected and the bid process is complete.
Approved contractors may not begin until you have the official notice that you are cleared to proceed. Starting early voids your eligibility, grant and all. Wait for the notice before anyone in Abbeville or anywhere else touches the roof.
