Iberia Parish FORTIFIED Roofs and the Fortify Homes Grant
Iberia Parish runs from cane country down to salt water. Bayou Teche winds through the middle of it past New Iberia, the parish seat, and past Jeanerette below that, and the sugarcane on either side is the ground most people picture. South of the fields the parish changes character completely, thinning into marsh that reaches Vermilion Bay and the Gulf. Rising out of that low country are the salt domes, Avery Island and Weeks Island among them, islands of high ground in a parish that otherwise has none.
Why a FORTIFIED roof matters in Iberia Parish
That split matters when a storm comes. The bottom of the parish takes water off Vermilion Bay, and the top takes the wind that keeps going after the surge has stopped. Wind is the half that reaches every address in Iberia, cane field to city block, and it is the half a homeowner gets to do something about. A FORTIFIED roof is the answer to it: the deck re-nailed with ring-shank nails and sealed, the edges detailed, and the covering wind-rated, so a roof that loses shingles does not lose the ceiling underneath them.
Hurricane Rita (2005) drove Gulf water up into the low southern end of Iberia Parish, flooding Delcambre and the road between there and New Iberia.

New Iberia is the parish seat and the center of everything here, sitting on Bayou Teche where U.S. 90 crosses the parish. Jeanerette is downstream on the same bayou toward the St. Mary line, and Loreauville is upstream on the other side of the seat. Delcambre is southwest, right on the Vermilion Parish line, a shrimping town at the head of the canal that runs down to Vermilion Bay. The parish does reach the coast, but almost nobody lives on that end of it.

Is Iberia Parish eligible
Iberia Parish is among the parishes the Louisiana Department of Insurance lists as eligible for the Fortify Homes grant, as of August 5, 2026. Eligibility is confirmed at the address level, and the list changes every round, so the official map is the only word on whether your specific home qualifies right now. Check your address on the live LDI Fortify Homes map, and apply through the state at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, not on this site.
Eligibility in Iberia Parish is limited to certain areas of the parish, not all of it. Confirm your specific address on the LDI map before you count on the grant.
How the grant works for a Iberia Parish home
The Fortify Homes grant reimburses the cost of rebuilding your roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, up to $10,000 per home. It is a cap on a reimbursement, not a flat check, and the money is paid to your contractor after IBHS issues the certificate. You gather bids from at least 3 approved contractors you choose, and once you are cleared the work must be finished within 90 days.
Do not start roof work before you are selected and the bid process is complete.
Approved contractors may not begin until you have the official notice that you are cleared to proceed. Starting early voids your eligibility, grant and all. Wait for the notice before anyone in New Iberia or anywhere else touches the roof.
