Covington was laid out in 1813 in the fork where the Bogue Falaya runs into the Tchefuncte, and the plan it was laid out with is still on the ground. The blocks downtown are built around ox lots, open squares in the middle of each block where farmers hauling into town parked their teams and wagons. Around that old grid the town runs out into pine woods, and then into subdivisions that keep pushing further into those pine woods. Interstate 12 clips the south side and the Causeway approach runs down through Mandeville and across the lake, which is most of the reason Covington keeps growing.

The Fortify Homes grant in Covington
Covington is in St. Tammany Parish, which the Louisiana Department of Insurance lists as eligible for the Fortify Homes grant as of July 2, 2026. The grant reimburses the cost of rebuilding your roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, up to $10,000 per home. It is a cap on a reimbursement, not a flat check, and the money goes to your contractor after IBHS issues the certificate. Selection is a random lottery, so registering is not the same as being awarded.
