St. John the Baptist Parish FORTIFIED Roofs and the Fortify Homes Grant
St. John the Baptist Parish is split by the Mississippi, and almost everybody lives on one side of it. LaPlace, Reserve, and Garyville run in a line along the east bank at the upriver edge of the New Orleans metro, close enough to the city to commute into it and close enough to Lake Pontchartrain to have learned what the lake can do. The parish seat is Edgard, across the water on the quieter west bank. Behind the east bank towns the ground gives out into swamp that runs all the way to Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.
Why a FORTIFIED roof matters in St. John the Baptist Parish
The water that gets into houses here does not come from the river. It comes from the lake behind them, shoved south by a storm that has already gone by, and LaPlace has had that happen twice in nine years. Surge is what the levee work and the pumps are for. Communities in St. John the Baptist Parish
LaPlace is the big one, at the upriver end of the metro where U.S. 61 runs through town, Interstate 10 passes just north of it, and Interstate 55 starts at that junction and heads off across the swamp. Reserve and Garyville follow it upriver along the same east bank, one after the other on the River Road. Edgard, the parish seat, sits on the west bank roughly across from Reserve, with Wallace above it toward the bridge. There is no crossing between the two banks inside the parish: the Gramercy Bridge leaves the west bank at the top of St. John and lands in St. James, so the drive from the courthouse to LaPlace goes out of the parish and back in.

Is St. John the Baptist Parish eligible
St. John the Baptist Parish is among the parishes the Louisiana Department of Insurance lists as eligible for the Fortify Homes grant, as of August 5, 2026. Eligibility is confirmed at the address level, and the list changes every round, so the official map is the only word on whether your specific home qualifies right now. Check your address on the live LDI Fortify Homes map, and apply through the state at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, not on this site.
How the grant works for a St. John the Baptist Parish home
The Fortify Homes grant reimburses the cost of rebuilding your roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, up to $10,000 per home. It is a cap on a reimbursement, not a flat check, and the money is paid to your contractor after IBHS issues the certificate. You gather bids from at least 3 approved contractors you choose, and once you are cleared the work must be finished within 90 days.
Do not start roof work before you are selected and the bid process is complete.
Approved contractors may not begin until you have the official notice that you are cleared to proceed. Starting early voids your eligibility, grant and all. Wait for the notice before anyone in Edgard or anywhere else touches the roof.
